Jada Pinkett Smith's Mom Once Questioned Her Marriage To Will Smith

Mothers always know best! Well, sort of. On Jada Pinkett Smith‘s new Facebook Watch Series, Red Table Talk, she recalled a time when her mom, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, once questioned her marriage to Will Smith and thought that they should get a divorce. Apparently, Jada’s mom didn’t understand why her daughter and Will decided to call themselves “life partners” instead of husband and wife.

“She was like, ‘Well, why don’t you guys just divorce?’” Jada explained, but the 47-year-old actress couldn’t even fathom the idea of separating from her husband. “One of the ideas for me is that we’ve built such a beautiful community, we’ve built such a beautiful family… we do well together. Breaking that group and community up for me? It’s just never an option.”

Jada also didn’t want her two kids with Will, son Jaden Smith, 20, and daughter Willow Smith, 18, to grow up in a broken home. During the episode, she additionally explained that getting a divorce requires a certain level of maturity that she’s just never had.

“For me, personally, I’m not mature enough to have a divorce,” Jada said. “I’m just not. I don’t think I would ever be mature enough. When you have to start going in, breaking up assets… that’s when the red table turns upside down, and it won’t be red no more!”

However, Jada did say that she has been mature enough to work through the hard times with Will, 50, and she would always choose that rather than get a divorce. “I actually have more maturity to figure it out within, and work with what I got,” Jada said. “I’ve seen people try to have the most friendly divorces and at some point, it’s still painful.”

Jada added that she and her husband know that marriage is not easy but if they make time for one another it helps them “connect” better. She said, “Sometimes we’re in all different parts of the world. We love doing what we love to do and we flow so much light and power to one another to do it. That’s the thing that keeps us connected.”
